The premise of this book--that commercial musicians are prone to, and even encouraged to, overwork themselves, abuse substances, and neglect their mental health--is plausible, interesting, and supported by numerous examples from the world of rock, punk, and metal music. Artists like Duff McKagan, Dave Grohl, and members of Chumbawamba and Frightened Rabbit are especially eloquent. It is a shame, therefore, that the book's author is not. The writing is quite terrible (the numerous dangling clauses sounded like nails on a chalkboard to me), and the author's convoluted personal anecdotes have no added value. Not recommended--instead, consider a memoir by a musician who has partnered with a better ghostwriter.… (más)

Devastating account of fragility and self-destructiveness in rock 1990s+, written by a rock journalist who's on the same path himself.

Great stories and anecdotes. Some of the technical bits about music were over my head. Clearly written by a big fan, so some bias comes through. Better than I expected since I'm not into metal.
