Get Into Smoothies by Jamie Winters is a book for kids that teaches about nutrition and making smoothies.

I loved that the author spends a lot of time discussing the importance of nutrition. The book touches on different types of blenders, although the blender pictured throughout the book is a Vitamix which is my blender of choice. The author teaches how to build the smoothie from the bottom up which is similar to the way Vitamix recommends.

There were a few things I didn't agree with in the book including the fact that none of the smoothie recipes contain ice, which to me is integral to most smoothie recipes. I also didn't understand why the author was so heavy on prepping the fruits and veggies before blending. This doesn't need to be done for a Vitamix as these types of high speed blenders are capable of blending an iPad into dust. I also don't agree with the peeling of apples and carrots which would remove a lot of fiber and the majority of the apple's antioxidants are in the peel. Mostly I couldn't believe that nowhere in the book was the word organic mentioned. Kids are instructed to wash the fruits and vegetables to remove any residual pesticide. This was quite shocking to me and there is no mention of the top 12 fruits and veggies you should buy organic. Could this be because it's a Canadian book? Hmm...

Overall, it's a good book to get kids in a healthy mode with added instruction. We enjoyed the recipes. It contains very colorful photos and is neatly illustrated. It includes websites and further reading in the back and concludes with a glossary of terms.
