The Theater of Emerald Tears by Nix Winter
Setting in the '30 in an America where alcohol is forbidden and homosexual love leads to death, it's the story of Irish, a wanna-be teacher who smuggles rum, and of Sunny, an half japanese orphan who was sold to gangster Biagiotti as accountant.

Both work for Biagiotti and one day the gangster give Sunny as prize for one day to Irish. But what start as a misery ends in love and Sunny and Irish try to build a new life together far from New York. But the past has no intention to set them free.

A tender story, with less or nothing sex, but with intense feelings. It's a novelty for the Nix Winter I know, but it's not a bad novelty. It's also an inusual setting, even if it's pretty short and you can have a good idea of how the author deals with an homosexual story setting in an historic period.

Nevertheless, I like reading it and with the others two story of this anthology, it's a good reading.

Arrested Kisses & Cigarette Smoke by Nix Winter
This are two brief tales about Taylish and Daniel.

Daniel is a former hustler now blind and married to a cop, Taylish. We don't know how he manages to build his new like (maybe there is another book I have not found) but he is pretty happy. Only he wants to prove to Taylish he is no defenseless and he can protect himself.

Taylish is an hard detective, used to the horrid life of the world and he wants to build a safe alcove for Daniel, a place where his lover can be safe. But he has to admit that trying to cage a bird is like kill him.

The love between Daniel and Taylish is hot and sexy, but I really want to read the beginning of this story: like this I feel the lack of something. Maybe the problem is that Nix Winter's works was epublished by Venus Press and now you can only find it in the second hand market. Loveyoudivine is re-released some of these works, so maybe in the future there will be the chance to read all about Daniel and Taylish.

A note: in Knights and Cookies by J.J. Massa there is a supporting characters, a detective named Taylish, but the looks of this last is not the same of the Taylish by Nix Winter...

This is a collection of five episodes on the Pet Series by Nix Winter.

The main characters are Alyx and Tristan. Alyx is a pet, a man born in a community genetically created to be sex toy to the aristocracy. Tristan is a space captain who has lost his pet and his crew thinks to gift him a very special birthday present, Alyx. Alyx's people thinks all aristicrats are gods, but Alyx is not of the same idea and he doesn't want to submit to a master, he is a harper, a musician. But his body betrays him and when he is claimed by Tristan, he can't resist to the sexual hunger.

Valentine is a vampire and Tristan's friends. He pushes Alyx to claim his independence. Poison is Valentine's lover. This is the couple I appreciated less in the series.

Evander is a pirate. He has had many pet in his bed but noone he has taken forever. And then he found Squirrel, a blind pet, but very clever and handsome, and maybe he for the first time has found a pet that can please him in and out of bed.

The Series is very interesting. In the end I was a little lost in all the political details and have skipped some pages to read about the master/slave relationships between the characters. But overall it is a very arousing series, very imaginative. But I have to adivice you: if you don't like the uke/seme relationship, the pleasure/pain lovemaking, this is not your story. It has many and deeply details of forceful sex, and it can be seen has not polically correct.

This story was a great blend of Science Fiction and Fantasy. As the other reviewer noted, there are vampires and fairies, but they exist in an intergalatic, space-faring society. The idea of sex slaves is not new, but genetically engineered "pets" is a fresh and original take on the idea. They exist on their own world, and become pets when the "gods" choose them to serve. Only, Alix didn't want to be chosen.

Tristan soon comes to realize that his new pet, Alix, is more than he seems and more than he should be. Alix loves his new master, but is more independent-minded than his genetics should allow. This makes it possible for a touching love story to develop. Nix Winter doesn't just throw some technology around and call it a plot; there is action, adventure and intrigue to go along with the hot sex. Tristan is a noble as well as a ship captain and when he returns to court, politics and scheming abound. And, readers should know there is some light BDSM. Alix is a pet who "needs" to be punished at times. The book is the first 5 parts of a series, and the author is working on the subsequent episodes. So, the ending does leave readers wanting more.

My only problem with the book is that is suffers from a lot of typos and some grammatical errors. That is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. This can interrupt the flow of the book, but the story is good enough I was willing to move past them. Hopefully, the next installment will be better edited as I really want to read more about Alix and Tristan. Recommended.… (más)
