The Son by Elena Wilkes

Expecting a twisted, dark, and grim tale…I found just that. I believe this is a book that will appeal to many readers though it did not really connect with me. I found Beth hard to like, difficult to understand, very gullible, and her decision-making skills questionable. The people in her life, not just the men, were less than the best. The only ones I truly cared about were the poor trafficked young people and what they endured. I came away scratching my head and wondering what really happened and what would happen to the various remaining characters at the end of the story. Manipulative, mad, murderous, malicious, and mega-happy to read the last page and move on. I am on the fence about reading another book by Ms Wilkes but might give her next one a try as I did find the first two better than this one.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Thank you, NetGalley and Storm Publishing for my e-ARC.

Life is going well for Beth. After a whirlwind romance, she is married to Drew, a stable, solid, jovial cop. No more juggling numerous part-time jobs. She has a fulfilling mission helping prisoners as part of the Samaritan program. No more judgment from her mom. And Drew is so good with Joe, her volatile teenage son. So why is she so anxious?

Because something is…off. She gets a cryptic phone call. Drew and Joe are acting strange. Is it her? Although she is competent at her job, she works in a prison. The work environment and the backstories of her clientele are bound to take a toll. Or maybe she doesn’t really know Drew and Joe.

Although wordy at times, overall I enjoyed the book. It was not at all what I anticipated, having read the blurb. It had an intricate plot and a surprise ending.

That was so twisty and I had my smug rug pulled out from me a number of times! I love dual timeline narrations in this genre as layers are peeled back slowly through the jumps in time. Elena is excellent at creating a feeling of growing unease. Things seem smooth on the surface but you start to get an uncomfortable glimpse at that problems roiling beneath. A good murder mystery and I'll be on the look out for books from this author.

The Man I Married is the story of Lucy and Paul's marriage. On the surface, they have the perfect relationship, the whirlwind romance, the undying affection, and the wedding for the ages.

Paul is the perfect man, and Lucy cannot find fault with him... Yet, when Lucy discovers photos and text messages that Paul cannot explain away, she begins to wonder how well she actually knows the man she chose to spend the rest of her life with. Paul's secrets are far darker than Lucy knows, and what's worse? How far he'll go to keep those secrets quiet.

I wanted to enjoy this book a lot more than I actually did. While the first half was incredibly slow, the second half felt rushed and vaguely puzzling. With that being said, this is a nice book to spend your weekend with. I wasn't sure what the twist would be and was surprised, which was nice given my overall feelings about the book. The audiobook was more engrossing than I was expecting, but it only marginally improved my opinions.

Overall rating: 2.5/5 (rounded to 3)
