Unless you're an advanced student of the topic at hand, you probably don't need to read this book, and even then you don't need to buy this book, as it has a price that only an institutional library can love. For everyone else it's inter-library loan fodder. Still, what you will get to a large degree is an Italian take on what World War I meant to the country, as many choices were driven by the sense that Italian reunification still had enemies, even when it was not yet complete. This is not to mention that just because Rome ultimately joined with the Entente, it doesn't mean that there was a great deal of appreciation for what Italy had to offer, or what might be considered legitimate recompense. Some might consider Rome to have been its own worst enemy in regards to inter-alliance diplomacy, and the failures of the war certainly provided a rich growth medium for the rise of Fascism.

To be clear, I actually like this collection of essays, but it's also hard for me to point to any single one that is really essential.
