An inspirational doctor arrives at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in 1944 and transforms the lives of his patients and staff. The patients are paralysed soldiers, written off and facing death from neglect, but their big breakthrough comes when Doctor Guttmann introduces sport into their rehabilitation.

Guttmann rejects the general view that paralysis is a terminal condition and throws out the old care regime and soon establishes a new regime, getting all his patients to live fulfilling lives, using sport to help patients build physical strength as well as self-respect.

Verso la fine della seconda guerra mondiale, il dott. Ludwig Guttmann, un esile rifugiato dalla Germania nazista, arriva all'ospedale Stoke Mandeville nel Buckinghamshire ed è inorridito nel trovare i pazienti spinali parzialmente paralizzati pesantemente sedati e lasciati marcire con piaghe da decubito. Comincia immediatamente un nuovo regime, smaltendo vecchie attrezzature e sedativi, mettendolo in conflitto con la severa Sorella Edwards e la pomposa consulente Cowan, così come i pazienti. Tuttavia la sorella lo sostiene quando si rende conto che sta trattando le sue accuse come persone, non pazienti, parlando con loro e coinvolgendoli in intrattenimenti musicali e attività sportive. Presto Whitehall gli manderà tutti i suoi pazienti spinali e, con le visite al pub e gli sport su sedia a rotelle insegnati da un sergente dell'esercito, diventa l'eroe degli uomini. Con la guerra su Ludwig organizza gare sportive nazionali su sedia a rotelle che a loro volta porteranno alla creazione dei giochi Paralimpici.
