Elizabeth West wrote of how she and her husband worked towards self sufficiency in the north Wales hills, from 1964, in Hovel in the Hills. This is a lovely read, whether one aspires to self-sufficiency or just likes reading about it from an urban armchair. Her gardening story and advice followed in Garden in the Hills. This is self-evidently the cooking side and, with a little narrative at the start of each section, is a very practical recipe book for the country kitchen.
