I thought this was solid follow up to book one. I still really liked the wide cast of characters we have met. I would love eventually to get chapters from their point of view. I loved how complex the mystery has became and how the tension in this story has became some intense. I also really loved the various setting we were exposed to and all the various exotic locals we go to. I think the mystery is so well crafted and I will def be checking out the last book in this series!

I’ve always been fascinated with Lizzie Borden, and enjoy reading various retellings of her story. Diana Rodriguez Wallach does a fantastic job in Hatchet Girls with not only a reimagining of the story, but she’s able to modernize it with new characters, and incorporate history into this YA novel that will have many readers jumping onto the internet (or hopefully, into other books) to find out even more about Lizzie, her sister, and the towns she grew up in and later moved to…. Maplecroft, anyone? I mean, how cool is it to have such a ritzy home that it has a name!?

This is a fast paced read that changes timelines to before and after the murders, and between two of the characters (for the most part). Combined with historical facts, supernatural lore, witchcraft, some light horror, lots of creepiness, and some Puerto Rican representation, it’s a must read for fans of the true crime genre. Or just anyone looking for a great YA thriller!

(Trigger Warning: Women being abused by men.)

Omigod was this an amazing and wild ride of a book! Diana Rodriguez Wallach does it again with a historically inspired THRILLER!

One hundred years after the Lizzie Borden murders, Tessa's brother, Vik, has just been arrested for the totally gruesome murder of his girlfriend's parents--only he doesn't remember a thing about that night. Determined to exonerate her brother, Tessa begins her hunt for the truth. A hunt that just might lead her to into a dark and wicked haunted forest as well as the home of the original axe murders. In this Lizzie Borden inspired thriller, sh*t is about to get real.

I loved Wallach's Small Town Monsters and was so pumped that she would be writing another historically inspired thriller--she did NOT disappoint! Hatchet Girls is packed to the brim with historic references, terrifying forces, and a twist I honestly did not see coming. If you still need a spooky thriller to round out your fall season reads, please--for the love of everything that's good-- add this to your list!
