This vibrant, colorful book is sure to appeal to teens no matter what their interest in fashion is. From the eye-catching cover to the subject matter, teens will be attracted to this book whether they are considering a career in the fashion industry or not. Even this reviewer reconsidered her career choice while reading this book. The handbook covers all facets of the fashion industry including designers, editors, stylists, models, makeup artists, and photographers each with its own chapter. Each area of interest also has a toolkit for aspiring professional in fashion. For example, the “essential items of the pros” for an editor include a recorder for interviews, passport, a brightly colored suitcase for easy spotting at baggage claim, and face powder for a polished look all day. Many of the people highlighted are tops in the field, well known, and work for Vogue and some are up-and-comers. Sprinkled throughout the book are bold-faced, yellow-highlighted helpful tips for teens to consider in planning their careers. The appendix includes a list and description of top design schools, a glossary of words in the fashion biz, a “talking the talk” guide, and an index.… (más)

Take Vogue magazine, reduce the content, omit any overt sexuality (although not suggestive references), include references to reduced priced fashion pieces (from Macy's and the like), stress the ages of the teen models, fill 75% of the pages with advertisements, and you have this edition of Teen Vogue. The cover story, an interview with 14-year-old Chloe Moretz focuses less on her acting (especially in the recently released movie "Hugo") and more on her status as a fashion icon. The pictures she is featured in make her look less like her age and more like a little girl playing dress up, with 6 inch heels, pencil skirt, and a button up blouse. The other articles in the issue include a sparse travel piece about fashion in Moscow, a short interest piece about a young model taking photographs at Paris fashion shows, and some small biographies. The other central piece is an editorial about teenage girls and the social pressures of dressing in the latest fashion trends. It is rather ironic that the central theme of this piece revolves around finding your own style, because the pages surrounding it are filled with images and fashion editorials encouraging young girls to spend exorbitant amounts of money on clothing and accessories.Readers age 14 and above, who are interested in high fashion design, will appreciate the trend-setting styling and photograph editorials.… (más)

The Teen Vogue Handbook is an occupational guide for teens interested in careers in fashion, including aspiring designers, photographers, stylists, models, and magazine editors. Interviews with famous names like Marc Jacobs, Pat McGrath, and Anna Wintour are accompanied by stunning photos, including many from Vogue and Teen Vogue, and visually arresting graphics. The book offers insider perspectives on how teens can get the jobs of their dreams in the fashion industry, including recommendations for media, products, and educational paths. Since the book is divided into sections for each career field, and then subdivided by the subjects of the interviews and stories, it’s easy to read in small bits. An index aids in navigability, while a glossary helps with unfamiliar terminology and a section on design schools helps students identify colleges to further their goals. Two caveats: because the book’s discussions of fashion are so au courant, they will probably become dated fairly quickly, and much like its namesake magazine, this book may be unrelatable for less affluent patrons. Overall, though, a good non-fiction addition to your YA collection; recommended for ages 12+.… (más)

If you are a teen seeking fashion trends, you need to look no further than Teen Vogue. The October issue of 2010 features pop musician Justin Beiber. The corresponding article is one of the lengthiest and densest in terms of words per page. Not only do readers learn about Bieber's latest television appearance and movie aspirations, the reader also learns about the clothing Bieber is wearing in all of the magazine's pictures. All of the articles featuring stars such as Selena Gomz and the Olson twins include captions or feature articles about the clothing worn by these celebrities. Teen Vogue has a lot of advertisement. With a heavy ratio of advertisement to text the table of contents does not end until page 35. This makes it difficult to find where articles are located in the magazine without relooking at pages of ads. However, the heavy use of advertisement is helpful for the reader interested in taking in images of current fashion by designers such as Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton. Additionally, it is often difficult to distinguish the difference between an ad and a feature. For example, the October issue included an advertisement for Target's Mulberry line, later in the magazine is an article about the same product; the photographs in both are similar. Aside from the Bieber article, the only other feature lasting more than a couple pages is an article dissuading readers from bullying and encouraging readers to help those being bullied. Ages: 12-18.… (más)
