A fine overview, but a little dated given its emphasis in tying background to events current at the time research was being done for this book, including the first intifada, the Iran-Iraq war and the first Gulf War

The Great Documents of Western Civilization is an exceptional book for any history fan or reader wants to be well read. This book covers important eras and events ranging from the rise of the papacy to the formation of the United Nations. Unlike most history books The Great Documents of Western Civilization covers the events by presenting snippets of the documents, speeches and letters that helped shape western civilization. Viorst includes helpful and insightful introductions which help illuminate the documents and their significance to the formation and movement of western civilization. Through his writing and the documents Viorst captures the mood and the meaning of these great documents, the people who wrote them and the people who received them.
