A strange book to find in a second-hand book shop. It reads like a paid writing assignment from the CSIRO to mark the occasion of the ship's retirement, rather than a book written for commercial success. Interesting read at times... but something made to flick through rather than read cover to cover.

Most Australians will be well aware of the Second World War Kokoda Campaign fought against the Japanese in the most desperate days of 1942. Much less well known, but concurrent, is the Battle of Milne Bay in which Australian soldiers and airmen fought and defeated Japanese forces in the defence of vital airfields constructed by US Army engineers at the Eastern tip of Papua New Guinea. The Author melds together an at times harrowing narrative history of the battle, drawing in voices from both sides, on the ground and in the air, as well as exploring the bigger strategic picture and the question of why the battle appears largely forgotten in the shadow of the Kokoda Campaign.

Recommended.

Turning Point by Michael Veitch, published by Hatchette Australia, purchased by the Reviewer from Readings Books, St Kilda, price $A 32.99.
