PROLOOG IN DE TEMPEL
Inleiding
Het gesprek vindt plaats in de grijze oudheid van de Egyptische geschiedenis, lang
voor de verovering van Egypte door Alexander de Grote (33I voor Christus).
De deelnemers zijn Hermes Trismegistus (in de vertaling afgekort tot Hermes)
die de Grickse schuilnaam draagt van Thoth, de Egyptische god van schrift eu
geleerdheid, voorgesteld met een ibiskop (eigenlijk is, zo wordt ons pas in hoofdstuk
37 medegedeeld, deze hoofdpersoon cen kleinzoon van de Hermes Trismegistus, die
in Hermopolis begraven ligr); Tat, een andere naam voor Thoth, maar hier en in
andere Hermetische geschriften voorgesteld als de zoon van Thoth, die door zijn
vader in de geheimenissen van de Gnosis wordt ingewijd; Ammon, ook een Egypti-
sche god, Ammon-Re, de zonnegod, die vooral vereerd werd in het Egyptisclhe
Thebe (Luxor) en Asclepius of Grieks Asklèpios, in werkelijkheid de Egyptische arts
Imhotep (Grieks: Imouthes), na zijn dood vergoddelijkt, uitvinder van de genees-
kunst, aan wie 'een tempel is gewijd in het bergland van Libië aan de cever van het
Krokodillenmeer' (37), dat wil waarschijnlijk zeggen: de heilige dodenstad in de
woestijn ten westen van Memphis (bij Cairo). De Asclepius van deze dialoog is óok
een kleinzoon van dé Asclepius, volgens hoofdstuk37
Al deze goden worden als mensen voorgesteld. Dat was al gebruikelijk in de
