This is a very informative book. Beginning with auto framework, through all the various segments of a total rebuild, it gives many photos and descriptions in a step-by-step process to have a fantastic hot rod when completed. It also includes a source guide for locating items you may need.

I highly recommend this book to anyone considering building a rod. That being said, I caution the reader that the title is misleading. This book will help any builder save money, because it outlines several issues the author and others have encountered that greatly increased the ultimate cost of the build. Because of these examples, a builder can avoid these costly mistakes.

However, the book does not show how to build a rod, in the sense of a step-by-step guide, i.e. do this first, then do this, thirdly do this. Nor does the book list options showing where one course is less expensive than another.

What the book does show, which is invaluable, are the choices a builder has to make in the process of creating a hot rod. So that a builder can take this book and plan out the entire build on paper, ahead of time. That way, the builder can avoid having to put the project on hold after, say completing the frame, while trying to make a decision about the engine that he or she did not anticipate.

In summary, while the book was not what I expected from the title, I felt that what I learned was more than worth the time spent reading it.

A good one from Tony Thacker, but not perfect. The book contains the first good explanation of what 'ackerman' is I've come across and why it's important for good steering. Explains many things to watch out for like making decisions on drivetrain, suspension and so on before starting, not playing it by ear as you go. One thing not addressed is front frame clip swaps for fat fendered rods. Only beam front axles are covered. Still, a bit too much 'take it to a pro' at times. Also buying your way in for a first rod seems to miss the point. You want to build your own, not buy someone elses. Your own ideas and solutions made real. That's what we want.… (más)

Tony Thacker has a wealth of knowledge, and he does a great job of conveying it to the next person wanting to follow in his path. A good history of rod building, many resources for the beginner and a treasury of pitfalls of others, including himself are included with the book, in addition to the guide aspect of the work. The reader does need to have skills in automotive work and restoration work, but even the novice will gain a lot of insight into rod building success (and failures to avoid). The sidebar stories of Tony and many others that he has associated with adds a dimension that many other guides don't. His time and experience in the hobby cum business are lavishly shared with the reader. In addition to the many features there are hundreds of photos as you go along the path of your build, which enhances the experience. If you want to build your first hot rod, this would be a great place to begin your journey.… (más)
