I had received this book to review and like another reviewer was a little put off at the beginning. However, kept reading and by the end was enjoying the book. It is nice to see the vampire as the villain again, even if he was picking off the worst of the worst in prisons.

The anti-hero Josh is a con-man and escape artist who didn't really belong in the maximum security section with the Latino gangs and white supremacist. When the tension between the two factions explodes into a riot, Josh is caught in the middle, protecting the warden's secretary Sally. Before he knows it they have bigger issues fighting the vampire and his minions.

The writing is so vivid; it was so easy to picture each of the characters. The story has some great twists, just when you think they are finally safe something else happens. There is also some quirky dark humor which I won't spoil for other users but I thought really added to the story. I will say unlike some of the other reviewers, other than right at the beginning I really didn't think it was that gory given the subject matter.

I received 'Blood Cell' by Shaun Tennant in exchange for a honest review.

A new take on the over-done supernatural vampire genre, still using all the traditional vampire lore (fear of sun light and garlic, super strength, amorphous and shape-shifting powers). A fun ride if you are looking for a fast paced horror vampire story. However, the twist comes from the hero. There are no good guys here, as the vampire is in a prison during a riot. Hence, the hero kind of wears a black hat, and plays a shinning grey knight.

The author did a little more telling than showing but I believe he will become better as he writes more. He certainly has a knack for entertaining horror stories, and I recommend this story for anyone looking for one.

Rigor mortis. Walk it off.

I know I keep saying this a lot lately, but I really didn't see that coming.
I loved how it began: the prologue was well written and eerie, and it just sucked (too soon?) me right in.
Warning: There is some amount of blood and gore in the book, (It IS a non-sparkly-vampire book.) and if that's not your thing you might want to stay away.

A lot of the characters and their back stories were introduced at the beginning and I wasn't really sure if it would come together, but I needn't have worried.
It flowed smoothly and I was completely engrossed.
The characters were really interesting; even though I found myself rooting for Josh (duh-doy), I couldn't help but wonder about Santos and the other inmates.
The story was infused with dark humour and other witticisms (especially in Josh's narrative) making it an overall entertaining read.
[About an inmate]Of course his name was Ox. He probably had a friend named Moose.

My one complaint: the two epilogues. Is this a thing? I mean, is a book supposed to have two epilogues? I don't mind the content, and I realize that both stories were epilogue-y and had to be written separately, but I wish it was presented in some other way.
It's just a minor annoyance though, and overall the book was really great and I absolutely devoured it. (she said without a hint of irony)
