I enjoyed Vivien Teasdale's book about Huddersfield in the Great War. The author takes a thematic approach to the subject, so there are chapters on employment, recreation, etc., as well as some surprises (for example the use of animals in war and their commemoration, locally, on War Horse Day).
The book is well-illustrated, with good quality pictures and newspaper advertisements of the day, and it has a good index and bibliography.
The inclusion of a timeline of the war is also a nice touch. This is the first time I have seen a chronology of the 1914-1918 war in summary form, and I find it very helpful more generally when considering the history of the period.
This is a good book for those who would like to understand the effects of the Great War on an industrial town in the north of England.… (más)

More about people (actually not even about people--just names thrown about wildly), this is not an interesting or particularly informative disaster book.
