The author was a Manx-born American who went to the East Indies in the 1930s and settled in Bali, where she was adopted by a Raja's family and established a hotel. She stayed on working for the resistance through the Japanese Occupation and the Indonesian War of Independence.
It's an interesting and exciting account of her experiences and she comes across as a very brave, determined woman. I did wonder from time to time whether she was exaggerating her role in events and I suspect she does tend to view her adopted countrymen through rose-tinted glasses. But even if half of what she claims to have gone through is true, she's entitled to do so.… (más)
