Biografía breve: Gillian Sze is the author of three chapbooks published with Withwords Press: This is the Colour I Love You Best (2007), A Tender Invention (2008), and, most recently, Allow Me to Conjugate (2010). In 2004, she received the University of Winnipeg Writers’ Circle Prize and her collection, Fish Bones (DC Books, 2009), was shortlisted for the QWF McAuslan First Book Prize and longlisted for the 2010 ReLit Award in poetry. Her work has appeared in a number of national and international journals. She co-edits Branch, a quarterly online magazine showcasing Canadian art, design and writing. She has a Master’s degree in Creative Writing from Concordia University and resides in Montreal. The Anatomy of Clay, her second poetry collection, is forthcoming from ECW Press in Spring 2011.

The Night Is Deep and Wide por Gillian Sze

This seemed to be more like an illustrated poem than a children’s story. There isn’t anything in the way of plot, it’s just some repeated phrases that are supposed to lull a child to sleep. The artwork is very bold and graphic; I don’t think it paired well with the soothing language. It was alright, but not something I’ll be picking up for the children I know.

The Night Is Deep and Wide por Gillian Sze

The Night is Deep and Wide is a beautiful poem with gorgeous illustrations.

This book felt so elegant. I really liked sinking away into for the day. It's sweet, repetitive and easy to read. I can see children and adults loving this book. The simplistic nature with the black and white pictures (with a splash of colour!) really make this book stand out. This could easily be a sweet poem before bedtime.

When Sunlight Tiptoes por Gillian Sze

This simple poem is an ode to a morning walk in the city. A family greets the day with a walk around their community saying Hi to the joy in life. This story is lovely, but quiet. The illustrations match.
