This book was a pretty good vampire novel. You have an ordinary man that has to become a vampire hunter as his wife is killed and child is kidnapped by a vampire. It is fast paced and it kept my attention throughout the whole book. Looking forward to reading the second novel in this series. Four stars on this one.

Near Dark
By Kevin Lee Swaim
This is book 5, the last book in the series. I sure will miss it! I have loved the great characters, adventures, and thrills the books have taking me on.
This book was just as good and ended very satisfying. I was wondering how the author was going to manage several points but he did it in a wonderful fashion. Great job!

I am in love with this vampire series. This isn't your regular vamp hunting book. The more you kill, more more you turn into them in some ways. This book kept me glued to my tablet! Sam made a big change in this book, I didn't see it coming. Like the others, it has fast action with a faster pace. Great plot, well developed characters that I have come to love. A new and over interesting characters is introduced that is very unique! Wow! So creative and never dull! Kin love the writing flow, dialogue and interaction between the characters...that's what makes this special too.
The narrator is fantastic! The feelings, voices, the characters, all are always spot on! Great performance from start to finish!

This continues John's story as he was rebuilt into more than a man and used as a weapon. He was wiped of his memories but they came back. If the government knew, they would kill him. Only one man shares that secret. This book takes the team on another dangerous mission and John must once again use his skills and Eric protects John's secret and tries to keep the powers that be from killing the world. Lots of great action, fights, and secrets. Love this series!
The narrator is top notch! Keeps the pace going the way it should and the emotions ready to go!

This book is a combat/anti-terrorist book with sci-fi elements. It is super action packed and never dull. This story is about a soldier named John, a good soldier but gets screwed over by the army and he comes back to the states mentally wounded and angry. He commits a horrible crime and ends up in Gitmo. He is taken from there and experimented on and his memories erased and replaced with new ones. He is made into a super soldier. If he remembers his old life, he is a dead man.
The narration is wonderful. The narrator does an excellent job with the voices, mood and emotions. He does the crazy daughter too well, I am scared of her and I know she is not real! LOL

A Sam Harlan Novel, Book 3

I love this series! If you haven't read any of the other books you could probably read this and not get lost, the author catches you up but there might be spoilers.
This has vampires, witches, magic, suspense, terror, and lots of action! The characters are well developed and I love Sam, even if he is turning into a vampire, and his sister-in-law that is a nun. His writing draws you in and makes you feel like you are there, fighting along side him, and boy is that terrifying! Love this series so much!
The narrator is terrific! Clear voice and performs the voices perfectly. Keeps the mood and emotions flowing with the story! Wonderful!

Hard Times
A Sam Harlan Novel, Book 2
By: Kevin Lee Swaim
Narrated by: David Loving

This is book 2 in the series and it has spoilers so it is best if you listen/read book one first.
I really, really enjoyed this book! It is so unique and fresh for a vampire hunter book. The way he gets his strength and who is partner is...a Sister of the Church! How they kill the vampires is a bit different too. The weapons they use, silver bullets but the Sister uses her Cross a bit different! I like to find fresh and different stories and that is hard to do in a genre that is saturated. This also has great characters, wonderful dialogue, twisting plot, and heart stopping moments. My kind of vampire book.
The narrator was absolutely perfect for this book. A voice with a touch of gruff for the touch guy but it disappeared when he was using it for the many women he had to speak for. Also an elderly woman. He had to speak in a accent and it was very believable. I never stopped to think if it was an elderly woman, I believed it and continued with the story. Great actor. Wonderful story all the way around.
I would recommend this book to all fantasy fans, especially vampire fans. Start with book one, don't cheat yourself! Can't wait for the next book.

ABR's original Come What May audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

Come What May by Kevin Lee Swaim is the first novel in the Sam Harlan series and is a novel about an average man, Sam Fisher, who is suddenly thrust into a life of hunting vampires in an attempt to save his family. Sam runs a run-down family owned diner in a run-down town. Even though money is tight, he is happy. Suddenly, a group of vampires is in his life and his family is in danger. Sam struggles to come to terms with the reality of vampires and how he is connected to them.

While the vampire-lore in this story was not in particularly novel, the characters and the story were interesting. The cruel tie-in between Sam Fisher and the infamous vampire hunter Jack Harlan was the key to the story and it worked to motivate the characters and drive the story forward. I really enjoyed the how both Sam and Jack changed as the novel progressed. Jack’s change was especially interesting and a unique part of this story. However, there were two aspects of the novel that I think could have been improved. First, as with many vampire stories, there was a tie-in with the church. There was a loose relationship between the church and vampire hunters in the war against vampires. I think the politics of the church and the vampire hunters could have been an interesting addition to the story. As it was, it seemed that the church was used to as a way to accomplish some supernatural events. I believe that this aspect of the story will be further developed as the series continues and Sam becomes an accomplished vampire hunter. Second, I think the romance in this novel was forced and should have been left out altogether. It wasn’t necessary and to me it detracted from the story a bit.

The narration by Jim Tedder was well done. The characters tones seemed to be differentiable, which made the audiobook easy to follow. The production quality was good. I would recommend this story to readers who enjoy vampire stories that are not necessarily attached to the technology of the modern world.
