Not you average book on yoga. It follows the life of the aghori Vimalananda. Aghora is a left form of tantra involving spirts, spells, the dead and kali worship. I really enjoyed reading this. It was good to read something different.

My rating: 3.5, it was better than ok. I liked the book but it might never appeal me enough for a re-read, hence the rating. I still am planning to read the next in the series, Kundalini, as it is yet another intriguing & misunderstood topic.

Back to this book: imagine the weirdest thing you can, ramp the strangeness to 10 to 20 levels higher & yet you might not grasp the weirdness in this book. I have read few books on Yogis but this was way different than, yet, quite similar to them. Am sure that doesn't make sense but that's how this book was. I went in knowing this book will be different but had no idea I'll fail at even my attempt to summarise it. 1 thing is for sure. This isn't for everybody, am not sure who this is for but... Not for everybody. Read this book with an open mind & make your own conclusions. I'll post a detailed review on this soon.

Ps: why on earth doesn't Goodreads have 1/2 star ratings??

Old world literature, and certainly vedic astrology, tends to the personal. Man's anthropomorphism of his experience is a lost art of fleshing out intangible feelings and ideas. The ancient sages knew well the limits of language, where words fail to capture the meanings more felt than thought. Here is a story of old that binds together the lore of the grahas, integrating their meanings into a memorable report.

As with all translations of sanskrit literature, there is risk of not appealing to the modern vogue. This requires sacrifice on the reader's part. You will probably only read it once, not learn anything that a 'manual' on astrology couldn't tell you, but you'd feel all the better for it - as one does going to bed on a full stomach. It will fortify your understanding of vedic astrology and guard the integrity of the tradition. Its also quite entertaining - probably more for those already familiar in the field.

In this third volume of the Aghora trilogy, the Aghori Vimalananda uses the backdrop of the Bombay racetrack as a potent metaphor for the ultimate game of life, where destinies and fortunes are won or lost on the momentary edge of the finishing line... An enlightening window into the seemingly endless cycles of death, rebirth and the intertwinning of relationships which revolve around the universal laws of cause and effect.
