Mary Newton Stanard (1865–1929)

I would encourage anyone reading this book to read others on this same topic. While this "story," written in the early 1900s, is based on a great deal of research by the author, a strong bias toward Nathaniel Bacon comes through. I have heard that other works treating Bacon's Rebellion provide a much more balanced picture, and I expect to read those works as well.

This is a fictionalised biography of the life of Edgar Allan Poe, published in the early 20th century. It is written in a elaborate, poetic style that suits its subject; some modern readers might find it too flowery, but for the most part I liked it. Some of the references to the inspiration for The Raven and Annabel Lee seemed rather forced and excessive, but for the most part this was an atmospheric read that was redolent of the style of its subject matter.

This book is a very helpful resource in understanding more about the everyday life of the ancestors I'm researching. I recommend it for that reason, but also for anyone just interested in that period of history. Thanks, Mom!
