About the author: quoting from the second prepage of the book, Sophia Lyon Fahs is the author of multiple other books. "Mrs. Fahs, who holds degrees from the College of Wooster, Columbia University, and Union Theological Seminary, taught at Union for seventeen years. . . .[S]he served the American Unitarian Association as [a] part-time editor of children's materials; she is now Curriculum Consultant in the Department of Education of the Unitarian Universalist Association.
Dorothy T. Spoerl, formerly chairman of the psychology department at the American International College, Springfield, Massachusetts, has been principal of the Elementary School in Acworth, New Hampshire, and is now curriculum editor for the Department of Education of the Unitarian Universalist Association. About the book: while this book was first published almost eighty years ago, it has a wealth of wisdom and tradition, which never grows old. It presents stories from fourteen different faith systems ranging from California and other American Indian tribes, to those from Japan, China and Africa to name a few. This booklet of only twenty-six pages provides a concise history of the American Unitarian Association. The author reached back to 1753 when Charles Chauncy preached against the trinity. She moved on to William Ellery Channing's Baltimore sermon of 1819 making clear where the liberals stood. Slavery was an important issue for the early American Unitarians. Beginning on p. 22 in 1865 and ending on p. 24 in 1955, Spoerl outlines ninety years of meetings and negotiations between The American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America.
