This book is a great resource for someone who is just starting out on their ADD/ADHD or Autism journey, but it lacks detail or depth for someone who is already somewhat familiar with seeking educational accommodations. Many of the items covered are things I already knew about and didn't really need further clarification or detail on - so it didn't work as well for me, but would for someone who is new to the process. Even though I knew a lot of the information, someone newer would not, and for them this book would be a valuable resource to make sure they are getting the support that they need. I think this book is strong for persons in high school and their parents but it is not as strong for current college students.

I wish they had sampled college students from a wider geographic distribution as well as students from a wider range of colleges (urban vs. rural, small vs. large, single-sex vs. coed).

I also wish that there had been a better balance of gender in the responses. The one female cited did not respond in all instances and there were points where additional detail on her responses would have been of interest.… (más)

This is a fair guide for students with learning disabilities who plan to attend or are attending college. It gives a broad overview of things to consider and helpfully provides feedback from several students at the end of each chapter about the topics covered.

One important factual error should be noted. Disability Resources offices do not keep your records confidential - they keep them private. This might seem like a distinction without a difference, but it is quite important legally. Student Health Services and Counseling Services are truly confidential services covered under HIPPA that can only share information about students in very rare circumstances. Disability Resources data is covered under FERPA and so can share information with others at the institution on a need to know basis. Most offices take their duty to maintain privacy very seriously, though, and do a good job of limiting information sharing carefully.… (más)

I received this book from Early Viewers. It was perfect timing as I have both a Freshman in college with ADHD and a junior in HS with ASD. I wish I would have had this book last year!
Navigating the college search is extremely hard and stressful, and with a kid who has special learning needs, it is even more difficult. Parents have learned to navigate elementary, Middle School and Highscool but this is a totally different league. This book gives you the questions to ask, provides forms and checklists and things that you didn't even know you have to think about!
I really like how the authors layout the information in a chapter and then give "real-life" perspectives from some college kids.
This is a book that every school counselor and library should have on their shelves!… (más)
