Eric Shuster's career was leading liturgical music in a Roman Catholic Church and his wife was a former Franciscan nun with an advanced degree in Catholic theology. They were firmly entrenched Catholics, deeply involved in their parish ministry when an LDS neighbor introduced them to the Book of Mormon. What could possibly happen? This book's first 50 pages contains a sincere account of the Shuster's background and their gradual conversion to Mormonism in 1989. The latter 200 or more pages are devoted to a respectful comparison of 40 key doctrines in Catholicism and Mormonism which they found most meaningful. I particularly enjoyed the "Thoughts and Commentary" sections which follow each of the doctrinal explanations. The book's friendly, well-referenced, non-confrontational style makes it attractive and informative for both Mormons and non-LDS readers. Nothing here will offend Catholics. While this is certainly an apologetic work favoring Mormonism, it was refreshing to see Catholic beliefs presented in such a uniquely positive light. It's non-scholarly portrayal of doctrines and tradition seemed fair, easy to understand, and well-referenced. The corresponding Mormon doctrines were likewise explained in a favorable, authoritative manner. The 2009 publication avoids mention of most uncomfortable historical issues or current controversies issues facing either of the churches. Though it lacks an index, the format and arrangement make it useful as a reference text. I thought the book was both interesting and enjoyable.… (más)
