John Shower (1657-1715) was born in Exeter, England. His father, a wealthy merchant, died when John was only four years old. His widowed mother moved to London before John was 20. He began to preach at an early age at the encouragement of Thomas Manton. He was ordained in 1679 and was an assistant mostrar más to Vincent Alsop. He spent time in Holland as an assistant to the renowned John Howe, while many Puritans were living abroad due to the persecution inflicted on non-conformists. When he returned to England, he succeeded Daniel Williams as Howe's assistant in London.
