Carol420 | otra reseña | Jan 5, 2024 | I can't speak towards the entire collection of short stories from across the midwest but I saw a paperback copy of this book in a B&N back in about 1998 and was struck by one of the very stories that were whispered about on my college campus at the time. I also experienced a disturbance referenced at one of the locations in the story while living on campus. I have since found original newspapers from the 1920's, 1950's, and 1970's that were referenced in the story. The story in this book is almost exactly as whispered by students back in the 1990's on campus and corroborated in newsprint...

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler free way. If you feel anything in my review is a spoiler and is not already hidden in spoiler brackets please let me know. Thank you.
So this book is a collection of stories about supposedly real hauntings. They range anywhere from ghosts to will-o-wisps and currents times to early early years. The one thing they all have in common is they are all located in Wisconsin. The stories read as a story first and then they add on to it with facts or other peoples accounts of the same or very similar kind of haunting.
How I choose my rating:
1* Did not finish, or hated it but forced myself to finish.
2** Didn't really like it. Didn't hate it but not sure why I finished it other then for some closure.
3*** I liked it. I had some issues with it, but as a whole it was good. I probably won't reread again ever, but there is a chance I might finish the series. (If part of one) But if not it's not a huge loss.
4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this again, and I will finish the series. (If part of one) I would recommend to those I know hold interest in this books content.
5***** I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will definitely be rereading this and probably more than once. I will finish the series and reread it multiple times. (If part of one) I will recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!!

This book takes you on a state-by-state tour of haunted places in America and Canada.
Instead of just presenting fact after fact in a boring outline sort of fashion, this book gives a definitive narrative in each chapter and on each subject it covers. I think I like that the most about this book. It tells the ghost stories as exactly that, stories. And it tells them in a way that I feel they were meant to be told.
This book really sheds a light on some of our most haunted places here in the United States and even has a bonus section of a few areas in Canada. It tells you the background information on why they are deemed to be haunted and true first witness accounts of people that have actually seen the hauntings in these places. Be forewarned, this book does not leave out many details and some of them are rather gruesome.
Dates and records are included in this book but again they are not written about in a boring way. They are very cleverly interweaved into the narrative. Very well done.
Suggestion: read this book along with a map of the United States so that you can pinpoint each location you would like to visit and see for yourself. 😉
I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who's looking for good haunts across America and Canada, or to anybody who would like to know a little more history about our country and the ghosts that remain here. 👻

SumisBooks | 2 reseñas más. | Oct 13, 2019 | Ok, book tends more towards urban legends than it does ghost stories or haunted houses. Features stories that take place in various states in the US and parts of Canada. Goes through the states in alphabetical order. Appears it may be geared towards a YA age reading group as opposed to adults, but still ok overall.

ChrisWeir | 2 reseñas más. | Jun 10, 2016 | This was a bunch of short stories about haunted places. It is written in documentary form (which I dislike very much). The only thing that saved this from being 1 star is the fact that there were a few really good stories.

ghostbooks | 2 reseñas más. | Jul 3, 2012 | For the most part, the entries in this book are entertaining but not terribly well written. They don't seem particularly well researched either, going over a lot of ground that other books cover without adding much.
The main reason I keep this book, and the reason I recommend it to others, is because of the excellent, clear, well-researched, and interesting entry about the Bell Witch of Tennessee. I haven't found a better summary of the Bell Witch events anywhere.

KCShaw | Aug 2, 2009 | It's interesting, but I don't think there's enogh evidence to prove that much of it is real. I just kept thinking the whole time, who told her that? Maybe I'm just cynical...½

beckylynn | 3 reseñas más. | Oct 17, 2008 | 1966 Haunted Heartland, by Beth Scott & Michael Norman (read 16 Dec 1985) This is a collection of ghost stories, but written chattily, with no effort to be investigative. It was not worth reading.

The authors are objective, they don't try to prove anything; they just state the facts.
