Wanneer rechercheur moordzaken Emma Sköld wakker wordt in het ziekenhuis, heeft ze geen idee wat er gebeurd is. Het laatste wat ze zich herinnert is dat ze haar vier weken oude dochter achterliet bij haar vriend Kristoffer om naar de stal te gaan.
Emma komt erachter dat ze vijf maanden in een coma heeft gelegen na een ongeluk bij het paardrijden. Terwijl Emma bewusteloos was, heeft Kristoffers ex-vriendin Hillevi de rol van invalmoeder op zich genomen, een rol die ze niet graag wil opgeven. Om een oogje in het zeil te houden bij Emma, gaat Hillevi in het ziekenhuis werken.
Op de intensive care wordt Emma nauwlettend in de gaten gehouden door de beveiliging, maar wanneer ze haar verplaatsen naar zaal 73 kan iedereen dichterbij komen. Two years ago I had read a book from this series and it didn't surprise me how quickly I was immersed in it again and could remember everything before.
A mother fears for her child. When Detective Inspector Emma Sköld wakes up in hospital, she has no idea at first what has happened. The last thing she remembers is that she left for the stables, leaving her four-week-old daughter with her partner Kristoffer. Now she learns that she has been in a coma for five months after a riding accident. But was it really an accident? And why did Kristoffer bring his ex-girlfriend Hillevi into the house to take care of little Ines? Only a colleague from the police stands by her - he also has doubts about the accident theory. I have just read a book earlier in the series about Emma Sköld, and it is The Beggar, book before this one. I loved reading that that book so I was interested in reading the Scapegoat. It took some time for me to remember the characters since it was a while since I read The Beggar. But I soon placed them all and their past stories and the story itself was easy to get caught up with.

The burglary wave that takes place in Bromma was interesting to follow. Especially the online hate in connection with the crimes. Bromma has its own forum on the internet where the citizens of Bromma can write anything they want and much of it is hatred towards immigrants. Emma's sister, who usually lives in Bromma but now lives in Malta while Emma has her house is watching with increasing concern about what is happening through the forum and conversation with Emma. Emma herself has personal problems when her colleague who is also her boyfriend wants them to marry. However, she is uncertain and it affects both her private life and work.

The Scapegoat is a book that highlights racism and bigotry. When crimes occur, is the view that it is immigrants behind it and the hate is especially big online. This I felt truly reflects the world today. The book is a pageturner and I really loved the ending of the book and look forward to reading the next book in the series.

SWEDISH REVIEW

Tiggaren är den 5:e delen och den första boken jag läser i Emma Sköld serien. I och med att man kan läsa böckerna fristående så kände jag att jag kunde bara såhär med den senaste boken, annars så föredrar jag att läsa från början.

En av orsakerna till att jag fann boken riktigt bra är för hur aktuell handlingen är i och med det ökade antalet tiggare i Sverige. Det kändes verkligen som ett hett ämne, speciellt med den ökade främlingsfientligheten. Det var inte alls svårt att ta sig in i handlingen trots att jag inte hade läst de föregående böckerna och boken började på ett sådant sätt att det var svårt att sluta läsa för jag ville verkligen veta vad som pågick. Det är lite svårt att skriva om handlingen utan att avslöja något. Morden är oerhört grymma och jag hade svårt att förstå hur någon kunde rättfärdiggöra detta. Men jag fick också en känsla att mördaren drevs av panik i boken, genom att försöka mörka sina handlingar så fattas överilade beslut.

Emma Sköld är en intressant karaktär och jag är sugen på att läsa böckerna från början för att sätta mig in i hennes liv från början

ENGLISH REVIEW

The Beggar (Tiggaren) is the 5th book and the first one I have read in the Emma Sköld series. I usually prefer to start series from the beginning, but since this book could be read as a stand-alone did I feel that I could read it without missing too much of what had happened before.

One of the reasons I enjoyed reading this book was because how timely the book's story felt. The beggars are increasing in Sweden and it's a hot subject since xenophobia is on the rise. I had no problem getting into the story, despite not having read the previous books and the book started in such a way that it was hard to put it down because I wanted to know what was really going on. It's hard to write about the story without giving the plot away. The killings are very cruel and I was having a hard time understanding how anyone could justify them. I did get a feeling that the killer was panicking the book, rash decisions were made when the killer tried to conceal his/her identity,

Emma Sköld is an interesting character and I want to read the previous books to get to know her and to read about her life before this book.
