Written in 2002, shortly after the attacks occurred, this book describes what went on that day etched in the memory of those of us who watched what unfolded before our eyes on television. I read this on the 22nd anniversary of the attacks. We know a lot more about some aspects of the attacks and how the war on terror played out, but the book still provides about the right level of detail about the immediate event for elementary readers.½

A delightful extended essay on procrastination, meandering through Charles Darwin, Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Ellis, and Frank Lloyd Wright, this book is a quick read and the antithesis of self-help. It is full of choice quotable nuggets and meditations on the author’s fondness for dithering and putting off. I am grateful to this book for making me aware of the crow-assassinating St. Expedite.

I read it in an extended gulp, pausing only to clean my bathroom thoroughly while avoiding all my more pressing life projects.

An excellent description of the feast the indians and colonists shared in 1621. Otherwise called the first Thanksgiving.

This was a reasonably well done history of the French and Indian War. I would have liked to have read this when I had to learn about the French and Indian War originally. This covered all the major points and gave enough backstory and anecdotes to make everything interesting and understandable. Nicely done.

Mount Rushmore (Cornerstones of Freedom) is the historical story of one of our nation's grandest monuments and its creator's vision. It is located in South Dakota, but was originally planned to be in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. This story explains the difficult road of creating a monument to four of America’s presidents.

This story was very factual and gave great illustrations and pictures. It was interesting to see the process the monument went through before being completed. I enjoyed reading about how the sculptor's son was allowed to continue his father's work on the monument after his death. It was also interesting to learn that the sculpting work on the monument was never really completed due to World War II.

In the classroom, I would explain the process behind creating this monument and the sculptor's sacrifice to give students a deeper appreciation of it. I would also give students clay or play dough and allow them the opportunity to recreate the monument.

An awesome resource book! I love it! This book gives the reader an wide range of information on Illinois. From the land, history, people, government, places of interest, etc. The photos are phenomenal and keep the reader's interest. There are charts and graphs, as well as, FAQ's and WOW factoids written in the margins throughout the book. Even better, is the travel guide in the back. Readers can plan out a trip through Illinois and not miss a single thing!
