A competent enough social history of Barbados told through a cricketing microcosm. Specifically how a small number of prestigious private schools contributed to Barbados's cricketing, political and cultural development, both in colonial and post-colonial times.

Written by an academic, Cricket nurseries of colonial Barbados reads like it could have down with a good editor, and combined with the somewhat obscure subject, means that it would have limited appeal.

Another in the Famous Cricketers Series by the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians, this one featuring the great but happily not late Everton Weekes.

As with the other Famous Cricketers entries, "Everton Weekes" has a brief biographical note (although oddly still more illuminating than Weekes's autobiography) before an innings by innings statistical breakdown of his first-class career, highlighting the fact that Weekes once had a Test batting average second only to Bradman before slowly falling to the mere mortals averaging in the high fifties.

Oh how the West Indies cricket team would love him now...
