This book was a bit of a disappointment. The text is very uneven. One page is "Spring is here. The weather feels warmer. The sun shines longer each day." The next page is a diagram of the Earth's changing tilt as it orbits the sun, and the text with words like axis, northern, and Earth without explaining what they mean. Then it's back to things like "Small storms can become big storms." There is no differentiating the weather in spring from the weather of any other season. The only saving grace are the photographs. Some are quite pretty.½

Easy to read introduction to the lifecycle and varieties of moths, illustrated by bright photographs. Good for e.g. 2nd grade, or to read aloud to younger students.

The four-book series An Astronaut's Life describes Becoming an Astronaut, Space Travel, Life in Space, and Working in Space. The books are for new readers, with very simple sentences in large text on one page and full-page photos of astronaut activities on the facing page. It’s a standard format for nonfiction kids’ books but there’s something special about this series. The text is incredibly informative for all its simplicity, and full of amusing or surprising details about being an astronaut. The photo choice is really excellent also. Each photo is perfectly chosen for the accompanying text. Together the collection features a diverse array of faces; if you have a favorite ISS astronaut, you’ll likely find him or her in one of the pictures.

This book is all about the process of leaves changing colors in the season of fall. The book is broken up into chapters, or stages of the changing of colors in the leaves. I really liked this book, not only because of the amazing and colorful drawings, but it has great science content in a way that is very easy for students to understand. There is a great balance of words and pictures, and the pictures are very beneficial to explaining what the written text is saying. Breaking up the process in chapters is really awesome because students are then able to go back and reread a part of the book that they did not understand. One way that I would use this book in the classroom is designing a graphic organizer with the students as we read the book that organizes the process of the changing leaves.

This book would be a good read aloud option for informational text. This book is nice because it has minimal words, but still informational. I would definitely use this book in the lower grades versus the higher grades. I really like how this book talks about the relationship between ants and aphids, and also how it builds in concepts of partnership and what that looks like. I think that would be a cool way to spark that conversation in the classroom.

Fall is finally here in this sweet story. A family is growing pumpkins in their backyard. The story then goes on to talk about how they are watered and tended until they are ready to be picked and eaten or turned into a jack-o-lantern. The illustrations are colorful and will keep the readers’ attention. I would recommend this for any collection looking for books for younger readers that briefly touches on pumpkins and gardening.

Summary: This book walks through the difference between ants and aphids. The uses compare and contrast to help teach students about the individual insects.
Thoughts: I did not really like this book because I found it a little boring, but informative. I think some students would be very into it while others may not like it. One positive attribute of this book is that it has large font so students who struggle with reading can also access the content.
Use/Strategy:
- Teach about exploration
- Teach about the aspects of discovery
- Teach about species, order, families
- Talk about the details of each insect
-Compare and contrast insects

This a typical informational science book about sea urchin. It is a great book to put in your class library for students to read. This would also be a resource for older kids doing project on ocean life.

This is also an informational book which talked about how aphids and ants work together. All full-color photos and lively text are so creepy. Actually, I don't recommend this kind of books very much. Although students need to learn some creepy even horrible animals no matter injurious insects or beneficial insects, these kinds of books are too lively so they might be too sick for some girls.

I liked this book for two reasons. First, the author uses sidebars to elaborate on information mentioned in the text. Also, the author includes a glossary in the back of the book.

The use of sidebars points out and gives more information on something mentioned in the text. For example, in the text the teacher asks, “If we put this water in the freezer, what will happen?’’ and one of the students answer, “It will freeze!” The sidebar used is at the corner of the page that says, “Liquid water freezes at 32 degrees F (0 degrees C) or colder. Throughout the book the author uses multiple sidebars to state important facts.

The glossary included in the back of this informational book helps to define harder text that has been used throughout the book. Rustad includes a glossary to define words that are associated with forms of water such as: air temperature, evaporate, gas, liquid, and solid.

The main idea of this book is a teacher and her class act as detectives to solve mysteries of the missing ice cube and the missing puddle. Shows how water can change back and forth through different states.
