St Croix was not paradise for everyone. In 1848, the sugar plantations used slave labor in order to guarantee a profit. Augustus was born a slave. His mother, Eugenie, died in childbirth and Suzette hid the baby with her sister so he would not be murdered by his white plantation owner father.

The Governor has proclaimed that the newborn children of slaves shall be free and in 12 years, all slaves will be free. Some slaves are not content to wait and soon Budho and Augustus lead a slave rebellion.

While some of the characters were based on real people, the story is a work of fiction. This is an interesting read and the reader finds himself in St. Croix during a turbulent time. Rosas does a fine job in telling a part of St. Croix history.
