One of a series published by Mountain Press out of Missoula. The publisher has several geology travel series: Roadside Geology (see Roadside Geology of Connecticut and Rhode Island, Roadside Geology of Georgia, rel="nofollow" target="_top">Roadside Geology of Louisiana, Roadside Geology of Maryland, Delaware, and Washington D.C., Roadside Geology of Minnesota, Roadside Geology of Mississippi, Roadside Geology of Montana, Roadisde Geology of New Jersey). (I’ve got all the Roadside Geology books but these are the only ones I’ve reviewed). This series is designed for looking at stuff out the window while cruising on the Interstate (although see some of the caveats in the books covering states in the East. Supplementing these are Geology Underfoot books (see Geology Underfoot Along Colorado’s Front Range and Geology Underfoot in Yellowstone; once again I’ve got all these but these are all I’ve reviewed). This series assumes you are going to drive somewhere and then get out of your car and hike around a little. Finally, there’s the current subject” Rocks!, which covers a state (i.e. Idaho Rocks!). The idea is, again, you’ll drive somewhere and get out and rock around, but the diving can be a little more challenging, including National Forest and BLM roads. I’ve been to some of the places in the southeast corner of the state; Mennan Buttes and Craters of the Moon, and the coverage seems pretty good. Geological maps of each subject site, nice color pictures of outcrops, suggestions for further reading. I definitely have to visit some of these site – I’m intrigued by the giant star garnets along Emerald Creek in the panhandle.… (más)
