This is a fascinating book somewhat limited by the fact that it came out in 1995 when there was much less information publicly available about the siege and destruction of Mt. Carmel. The story gets sketchier and sketchier the further it goes - there's lots of detail about the initial raid and the early days, but less and less as it goes on, and almost nothing about the fire. Still, it's a great glimpse at one journalist's immediate (and very visceral) reactions to the whole debacle.

A decent enough read. I would compare his style to Hemingway or Fante. A little slow at times, but faithful to the subject matter and straightforward narrative.

This book has a little on history of each part of the state of Texas. It has a lot on the diverse cultures found across the state. Photos probably account for 30% of the space in the book.
