Sunder (Foreword Raj Singh Dungarpur) Rajan

Back in the late nineteenth century, Lord Harris of cricketing fame was Governor-General of Bombay (now Mumbai) and donated a trophy for a cricket championship between high schools in the Bombay region. And, to celebrate the century of the competition, the Mumbai Schools Sports Association produced a short book, which I'm now attempting to review.

The "Lord Harris Shield Cricket Tournament Commemoration Volume 1897-1997" gives a potted history of the tournament from the time Lord Harris decided donating a trophy was in order to highlights of the tournament (the most famous being the unbeaten 664 run partnership between Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli which may still be the all time record for a partnership) as well as recollections of former players and the Indian Test stars that came through the tournament (Sachin Tendulkar the most celebrated alumni although Sunil Gavaskar comes in second).

There's nothing sensational among the pages and some of the English of the contributors forced me to reread some sentences a few times.… (más)
