AUDIOBOOK

Ryan “Reaper” Hamilton and his wife Kate first appeared in the Kate Hamilton trilogy, which I have listened to and enjoyed several times, so I pre-ordered Fear the Reaper as soon as I saw it. When it arrived, I finished it in a single day. And I expect to listen to it again very soon.

The trilogy is written from Kate’s point of view during a highly traumatic period some months before the start of Fear the Reaper which focuses more on Reaper’s work with Iniquus. There are many apparently disparate threads in this story. They are skilfully bound into an explosive finale.

As always with Fiona Quinn the characters are well rounded with their own individual quirks and passions. A number of characters from previous books in the series make minor appearances here. I personally enjoy knowing their previous back-story, but I don’t think it is essential as far as enjoying this book goes. I would, though, strongly recommend reading/listening to the Kate Hamilton trilogy first.

Initially I didn’t think this was going to grab me but I became invested with the characters after a couple of chapters. There was a different dynamic. Although the main male character is FBI rather than an Iniquus operator, he had, like them, been in special forces before retiring from the military, but there was still a different vibe to this novel.

The main female character, Avery, is a Romance editor which makes for some very interesting discussions between characters about editing techniques and novel structuring. I always enjoy discovering something new about different places or professions when I am reading.

The build up of tension was very well written. As with so many of Fiona Quinn’s books i needed to take a break part way through (though I did finish the book in a day).

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW

This was the first book I read (ebook) by Fiona Quinn and I was hooked by her writing from that point, I’ve now read 12 and listened to 3.

I love her characterisations of the men and women of the world of Iniquus, and of the dogs, who often play an important part.

This particular book centres around Australian K9 handler Ryder, his young dog Voodoo, and their involvement with a CIA operation to locate a missing group of scientists. There are a few references to other Iniquus personal and operations, but nothing that would detract from listening to this as a standalone.

With an Australian main character it was a good choice to pick an Australian to narrate the book. Rupert Channing does a good job with different accents in this central European location. He is perhaps weaker on the female voices and I did lose track once in a while of who was ‘speaking’.

I do recommend this. If you enjoy it too, hop over to Amazon or the author’s website for a copy of The World of Iniquus Companion which gives you the reading order of the wider series along with character notes.

It would be a five except that the story got choppy towards the end. A lot of dialogue and tension.. minimal sex.
