This story didn't do much for me. The characters never drew me in, and I felt no empathy for them. It is a sad topic, and an important one, but the way it was presented was not very interesting. I think you could find better books on the topic.

A disturbing tale of three high school boys living in a small town. Their fathers, like many people in the town, have been shipped off to the Iraq war. Left to take on responsibilities and face realities about violence and adulthood, the boys flounder but maintain a tight friendship. The art is not great (I was surprised to learn the artist had used models for the characters, as I had a hard time telling them apart), but there are a few scenes of beauty or well-conveyed emotion.

A Rolling Stone writer spends a few days interviewing a novelist.

After spending an entire movie listening to these two characters talk about themselves, I still don't feel like I know who they are. Which is a weird thing to say, because they give us a lot of information about Wallace's past, and his motivations and fears and so on. But being told this information (even being told it in expertly acted and written scenes) just doesn't resonate the way getting it through a story would.

A teenage alcoholic meets a nice girl.

A story about a class clown type - which often has an attempted light tone - and there is not a drop of humor anywhere to be seen. Granted, that's appropriate to the character; he likes to think of himself as the life of the party, but in fact has no sense of fun. But this movie's too boring to care about any of that dramatic stuff - much like I wouldn't give a crap about this guy's problems if I knew him.
