Takes a lot of people to make Dolly look that cheap! Lots of great photos of her many costumes over the years - sadly in black and white on Kindle - and contributions from her team, past and present.

I read and listened to the audio of this memoir by Dolly Parton, who is one of the narrators of this tour through her closet of rhinestone-studded dresses and jumpsuits, jeans, shoes, and even wigs that she wore throughout her career. Defying all the advice that her sparkly, tight low-cut dresses, big hair, and high heels made her look “cheap” and would cause others not to take her seriously, Ms. Parton stuck to the flashy, over-the-top style that made her the most comfortable. The book has over 400 photos of her clothing and accessories, and, with the assistance of her niece, Rebecca Seaver, and music journalist Holly George-Warren, Ms. Parton takes readers on a tour of how her style evolved over the decades of her singing and acting career from the 1960s on. Ms. Parton’s passion comes through on every page of this personal and professional history of this national treasure.

IMO, hearing this in Dolly's own voice is well worth the loss of the photos, etc., you get with the dead-tree versions.

This story teaches children about emotions and feelings through the use of color. This connection between colors and emotions will help young children understand that their feelings are normal. It teaches children the importance of our reactions and how we act when we feel certain emotions. This colorful book will draw young children in and engage them in understanding their big emotions.

I loved it. Great coffee table book that shows the various styles of Dolly. From early works with Porter Wagner to mor glam in the 80s and on to today. And of course the Rhinestones. Full of full color photos of numbers outfits and she generally has a little story or background on each said outfits. I'm not a super fan by any means but this was a fun read. If nothing else just to look at the pictures.

This was a book club pick and I was just not able to finish it. It seemed choppy and read more like a very long and uninteresting interview. I adore Dolly and so this review makes me sad. If you want to delve into Dolly's life, I would recommend another biography.

Fantastic book!

I really enjoyed reading this book! The characters and storyline are totally original. I felt myself immediately drawn into the story and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next.
A heartwarming story of a young girl who wants to rise to fame but must overcome her troubled past to do so. She makes lifelong friends and pursues her dream.

Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones

I Picked Up This Book Because: #BlameItOnLitsy.

Media Type: Audiobook
Source: BC Public Library
Dates Read: 12/3/23 - 12/4/23
Stars: 3.5
Narrator(s): Dolly Parton, Holly George-Warren, Rebecca Seaver

The Story:

A look at the amazing Dolly Parton’s career from the perspective of clothing and fashion. I probably would have benefitted from having a physical copy because I’m sure the outfits were more incredible than my mind could conjure while reading. This would be perfect for a fan of Dolly or of fashion.

To thine oneself be true, could aptly sum up this excellent audiobook celebrating Dolly Parton's iconic and timeless style. Narrated by the icon herself, Behind the Seams takes readers on a journey through Dolly's early style, makeup, fashion, wigs, and more. Interspersed throughout the interviews are song clips and interviews with some of the designers and stylists who have helped showcase Dolly’s unique and unforgettable vision. From the Country Music Awards, The Porter Wagoner Show, album covers, Studio 54, and The Playboy cover – each outfit has a story to tell. Dolly Parton’s style has evolved over the years, but has always been flashy, busty, unique, and glitzy; just like the legend herself. Part memoir, part fashion manifesto, part archive; Behind the Seams is filled with humor, confidence, candor. This audiobook deserves all the rhinestone stars it can get.

If you love Dolly this book is a 5. If you're looking for a compelling story arc this book is a 1. I am both. I LOVE Dolly. I enjoyed the book. I also would love to know more about her in-depth story. Having listened to her podcast I was eager to learn more about her life. I'm not sure this satisfied that desire but it's a start. Just be grateful we get even a slice of dolly and enjoy.

Dolly Parton seems like the nicest, kindest person around. I just want to make sure that's known up front.

This book didn't especially impress me. It reads like a Wikipedia entry, a very nice Wiki entry. The stories and descriptions about her life - with one notable exception - are totally surface level. Her descriptions of people and her interactions with them - with one notable exception - are all compliments and platitudes. She hints at deeper levels, mentions health problems and psychological stress and general "tough times", but never tells us about them. This feels like a missed opportunity because, as RuPaul always says, it is your willingness to be honest and vulnerable that makes people fall in love with you.

Actually, this lack of depth and vulnerability makes me wonder who she considers the target audience for this book. Her fans will already know these stories, and people who aren't fans won't want to read through the hundreds of pages of song lyrics (least fun way to enjoy a song) only to get a Wiki-level knowledge of her as a person.

I can't bear to give less than 3 stars because she's so kindhearted.

This beautifully illustrated children's book is a part of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library--a fantastic resource for getting books into the hands of children and spreading literacy and the love of reading! This is a heartwarming children's story written by Dolly Parton herself and is autobiographical. It is a tale from her childhood, when the family lived in poverty in rural Tennessee. Dolly's mother sewed her a coat made from colorful rag scraps and was filled with so much love and stories her mother told her as she sewed the coat. It was so beautiful in Dolly's eyes, and her heart was broken when she arrived at school and the children all made fun of her coat of rags. She could not make them understand what a beautiful coat it was, especially as it was full of so much love and stories. That heartbreak did not ease for her until many years later. This book comprises the lyrics of the song Dolly wrote about that incident and it is the most meaningful song to her that she ever wrote. What a wonderful, poignant, beautifully illustrated book to share with your child and read to them!

Annie Lee loved country music, Nashville and singing. Despite her past, which she was running from and never talked about, she was determined to get to Nashville and sing. She met people who helped her, but her past was always with her.

I freaking love Dolly Parton and I love her even more after reading this book! It is ALL about her music. She does not get political. She doesn't bash a single solitary person. She just shares her music, her love of family and her husband, the love of Country.

I loved learning things about Dolly I never knew. Like that she has a song called PMS Blues (no joke). "I Will Always Love You" was written as a result of her trying to break away from Porter Waggoner (her singing partner). Dolly also has written a song that is in a sealed box and won't be shared for years to come......

FABULOUS read I got to say.

We listened to this book. I am glad because I can't imagine how disappointing it would have been to read it. The music business part of the story was okay but the mystery part was terrible.½

An interesting look at Dolly's life. My review here is going to be on the technicalities about the format and layout and the rest of it is perfecting fine. My issues are the fact that the layout it a little funky? Its got a format like an interview but not at the same time. Its also not linear and theres a lot of hopping aorund in time which leads to Dolly repeating a couple phrases over and over which was a lttle distracting. I think its a really neat look at her overall accomplishments with her songs but not her life over all. So for me I was lost as I'm not overly knowledgable about her life time achievements. So I'd say this is not for the beginner as there isn't a lot of build up or explainations, a lot of this is assumed that you already know what is being references or the entirety of her song. But I still enjoyed hearing about it. Honstly my one complaint is that the ending isn't woven in very well so the "The End" in the audio book just felt like it came out of no where.

THIS AUDIOBOOK WAS SO FUN! "i'm not happy all the time.. that's the botox" lolol Dolly is such a hoot. yeah know i don't listen to her music really nor do i know much about her, but i do know all the great and wonderful things she does for communities like her imagination library and the fact that she donates a lot of money into science. she is just wonderful human who was put on this earth to bring happiness to so many people. and i LOVED that this audiobook was basically a 5 hour interview - the way it was produced. Dolly Parton is JOY and you can tell by the way she talks about making songs and singing that she has SO MUCH PASSION for it! but for real though is there a song of hers that isn't her favorite? lolol but i am very happy that is was available on Libby for me to listen to
