In some ways this is the most informative of the bunch, possibly because the pre-stereotypes about Israel are thinner on the ground than some other countries. It talks about the kibbutz, and the Wailing Wall, and the diamond industry, and Moses, and then Oram ruins it all at the end by basically telling the story of the nation's founding as "The Jews got chased out by the Romans. Then they were sad. Then they returned, and were so happy they sang and danced in the streets." Any book for kids about Israel that neglects to mention the existence of the Palestinians is propaganda of the most pernicious kind. On the plus side, they've added a "facts in brief".… (más)

Um, well, the people of Russia are all strapping peasants who have a flourishing village life on their collective farms and like to eat and drink together. They are culturally sophisticated peasants, and sometimes enjoy a ballet at the Bolshoi. Once they had a tsar, and he collected faberge eggs. Then Lenin took over, and now everything is guns and seriously dark art for a little kids' book. Oram let his/her prejudices get away with him/her on this one.

I can imagine Churchill: "They should have said Great Britain, of course." Anyway, this gets to its end without even mentioning that England has any connection to Scotland, Wales, etc., or throwing something in about the Empire, which is fine in a sort of "this is the queen, this is a spotted dick" book, but this series has pretensions to actually inform, and maybe we could have lost the page on the herring fisherman OR the wool shearers. Does England even have a wool industry anymore?
