Finished January 2015.

I remember a conversation with my mother 35+ years when I was in high school. I was extolling the virtues of fiction books over non-fiction. She explained that often non-fiction reading can provide better reading, adventure and detail. I was suspicious. However, years later, I found that Wahoo is one of those examples. An excellent book detailing the cruises and exploits of Mush Morton, Richard O'Kane and the USS Wahoo. The style of writing is captivating and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Kind of wished the book did not have to end. The follow-on book, Clear The Bridge!, about the Tang is also good. There are a number of good books dealing with US subs in the Pacific during WWII. This is one of the best.

Excellent account of the Wahoo and its Captain during World War 2. Refreshing to see what an American can do when entrusted to rely on his senses, initiative, and good judgement. In fact, it is the principle reason Japan's powerful navy was devestated by America's Silent Service. Must read for military historians.

4784. Clear the Bridge! The War Patrols of the U.S.S. Tang, by Richard H. O'Kane Rear Admiral, U.S.N. (Ret.) (read 15 Dec 2010) This book is by the captain of the U.S.S Tang, which had an illustrious career in the Pacific War. All five patrols are related in detail, complete with lots of technical detail. One who served on subs would enjoy it more than I did. Some of it was repetitious though one must admire the men and the outstanding success they had, albeit the end is dolorous since the sub was sunk by its own torpedo!

The best book about the submarine war in the Pacific I have read.
