A welcome new series from Nelson!

In general I've really enjoyed her books. Both "The Hundred" and "The Ageless Mysteries" series were engaging, entertaining reads with fantasy, mystery and romance, but an underlying thread of dark mystery I was intrigued with.

We have Max, a Marshal who once saved the world at great cost...only to have the people she trusted kick her to the curb and tarnish her name. Almost a decade later she's living a life she is proud of when events begin to transpire to remind her of the darkness she thought she sealed away.

This first book does a good job setting the scene (not quite post-apocalypse, more like the world went cray and magic came to play), introducing us to the major players and giving us a firm idea of Max's personal moral code. The latter of which also gives good insight into the line in the sand being drawn by others.
