A fascinating and illuminating book: far more interesting and thoughtful than its subtitle suggests. 'From why we drive on the left to why we don't talk to our neighbours' doesn't cover it at all.

Mount begins by examining the England's geology, and shows how its great variety has begun to shape its economic activity. He moves on to the soil, our waterways, our towns, landowning history, gardens, industry..... He's full of information and most interesting facts which he dispenses with a light touch. Sprightly, informative disquisition on Latin - adding to what I knew and recalling some of what I had forgotten. I did not know, for instance, that the Roman elite in the 3rd Century AD commonly spoke Greek. There is some commentary which verges on padding but this is a minor cavil.

I had to break off listening. It tries so hard to be contemporary and light-weight, slips in a stupid joke or two. Neil Postman could have used it as an example of modern day instruction in his "Amusing Ourselves to Death".

A book which reveals interesting facts on almost every page about our social and industrial history, liberally sprinkled with concrete examples to illustrate the insights revealed. A shame that some of the illustrations are difficult to read, but this may be the fault of the source.
