Barrington Stoke readers - Very easy to read ( conversational style) novel about the first black soccer player in England who played for Tottenham Hotspur called Walter Tull ( or Tully). he played until the outbreak of WW1 where he eventually became the first black officer in the British Army. Fascinating moving story.

I thought the book “Bunny Wishes: A Winter’s Tale” was another great book for the holidays. The first reason that I enjoyed the book was because of the fun format of the text. For instance, when the author was writing about the wind, the words were written as if they were swirling around the page. And when she was writing about snow, the words looked as if they were falling down the page. The author also used speech bubbles for some of the dialogue and large font to emphasize certain words. This format is a fun change of pace from a traditional story, and would be very exciting to look at for young children. Another aspect of the book that I enjoyed was the illustrations. The illustrations had a lot going on on every page, and also filled the entire page. These illustrations are very engaging and enhance the book’s appeal. The author uses descriptive language such as “twinkling stars”, “hopeful bunnies”, “snowy hill” and “comfy burrow” to convey the light and joyful mood of the story. The main idea of the book is that love and family is the best gift you can get.… (más)

This is a beautiful love story between two rabbits, Tino and Tina. They each leave loves letters in a hollow log for each other. But when it starts to rain, a family of mice rips their "warm words" up to build a nest. The next morning the mice realize their mistake when each bunny comes to the log, sad that there is no letter. The mice help make one giant heart letter and they all live happily ever after.

I love this story! It's like Chicken Soup for the Soul, rabbit style. I think this is a great Valentine's Day book to read. It's a fairytale, but it sure is sweet. I think of all of those Valentine's we exchanged when I was in elementary school and how exciting that was. Love is clearly the theme in this story, along with compassion and teamwork.

There are some great extensions possible for Valentine's Day. We could write Valentine's to each other. We could also write poems and then get into groups. Each group would rip up their words and piece them together to form new poems or stories using every word.

The book doesn't mention the word "Christmas".

Two bunny friends each make a wish list and put it on a hollow log. The wind blows the lists onto some baby mice who tear them up and play with them. The mouse parents realize what has happened and all the mice work hard. The bunnies wake up to an evergreen tree decorated with words and letters from their original lists. "Heaps of love to keep you warm. Some one who always sees the best in you. A paw to hold. Cozy ears, snuggles and hugs. Lots and lots of love for you for ever."

Despite the amusement factor of celebrating Christmas without mentioning Christ (Harry Potter books did the same although I think they at least mentioned the word Christmas), this is one of best Christmas books for kids we have: It not just the loot you get that makes you happy and its fun to work hard to make others happy.
