Bai T. Moore (1916–1988)

This short novel describes the quest of Gaway, a Liberian tax agent, to get money back that he invested with a swindler. Set in various Liberian towns, the book takes place over a few days right after Gaway has lost his money. Unfortunately, the money Gaway lost belongs to the government, so his challenge takes on greater urgency. He fairly quickly teams up with Zolu, another random citizen he meets, and indeed because of the close nature of the area, many citizens learn of Gaway's misfortune.

The two follow the swindler through towns and festivals. The book, while in English, makes very heavy use of the local pidgin words with no glossary, so some is hard to follow. The book does build to a crescendo and finally some outcome emerges at the very end to mostly satisfy the intrigue in the story - and tell a story about the morals of men.… (más)
