So. I grew up with these books, and my set got passed to my cousin. I managed to snag a set when the local library closed. They are simple books, easy to read, and a good start for a child just starting to connect words with things, and sounds with letters.

Each illustration is accompanied by a single word that identifies it.

I read this book to my grandaughter while babysitting day. We both enjoyed the story and the humor. It did make her laugh. She likes to say individual words, one of which is "hat". She could also identify many of the animals pictured. The book shows how a hat can have many uses and also shows how the farmer's wife was able to solve the problem of the wind repeatedly blowing away the farmer's hat.. This is a cute story!

Jane Belk Moncure, who died in 2013) was an American author of early childhood non-fiction, fiction and poetry. She also wrote under the names Bruce Wannamker, Mary Thornton Blanton, and Jennie Davis. She received the C.S Lewis Award and other awards, including the Scholastic Teacher's Choice Award. I picked this particular because teaches kids to be nice to each other, and to share. I like how the Mother monkey corrects him when he is wrong and he doesn't exchange any words he just do as he is told. I can see this book being used with kids around six or seven years old. This can be a book that I use at the beginning of the school year to learn about class rules.
