In July, 1942, the Joint Chiefs of Staff set for the Americans in the South and Southwest Pacific areas three tasks. Task One was the seizure of Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and the Santa Cruz Islands. Task Two was the capture of the remainder of the Solomon Islands and of Lae, Salamanca, and other points in northeast New Guinea. Task Three was the seizure of Rabaul. This book covers the execution of Task Two. It is a solid if not spectacular piece of workmanship, focusing on the invasion of New Georgia, operations in the Markham Valley and Huron Peninsula of New Guinea, the invasion of Bougainville, and finally, action in the Bismarck archipelago, the Admiralties, and the seizure of Emirau.
