Overall it's very good and interesting and I'm so happy it exists. Once or twice the exposition conversations get a bit lengthy, tho they are necessary, and I have some quibbles with the pacing of the action and the ending. That's all minor, lovely to see an excellent academic and nonfiction writer step into a new genre.

Effectively creepy police procedural thoroughly grounded in indigenous beliefs. I found it difficult to put down, with evocative writing and several interesting characters.

The only criticism I would offer is that the police partnership between Monique and Chris is a bit unbelievable — in theory they’ve been working together for years, but their conversations make them seem like virtual strangers. I hope that they continue to develop deeper and more rounded voices if the series continues.

Part locked room mystery, part police procedural, and part supernatural tale featuring Choctaw myths. All blended into a fun read!

First, I must caveat this by saying that I did not end up finishing this book. However, I still have opinions on it. First, the author is not the best at writing mysteries at this point in time. The bits and pieces of other viewpoints were interesting, but the main plotline dragged. I ended up putting the book down after I was halfway through and the main character hadn't even finished investigating the initial scene of the crime. Thorough, perhaps, but not what I wanted to read. Second, parts of the book read more like a thesis than a mystery novel. I learned more about why Native Americans want their ancestor's remains repatriated and healthy eating than I did about the actual main plotline. Third, I actually found that kind of interesting. Mihesuah has a lot of interesting ideas and really could make an absolutely fascinating book if she could pace it better.½

I was assigned to read this book for a Native American Cultures class and when I first opened it, I was astonished it had even been published. First, there were more than a few editing mistakes. It was almost as if the book had never seen a editor at all! Second, the way the author writes portrays a feeling of anger and blame when addressing the stereotypes Native Americans face. While totally justified, this tone, especially for the target audience of white individuals, makes the reader feel attacked, almost as if the author is blaming the reader for perpetuating the stereotypes in the first place. The book still makes good points and brings important topics to light, but the overall tone and simple editing mistakes leads to an unenjoyable read.

An easy-to-read overview of the misinformation that's out there about Native Americans.
