Over all this is a really good book. I much preferred "Part I" where the author is more theoretical over "Part II" where he deals with some specific examples. It isn't that "Part II" is poor it is just that sometimes it seems the chapters/topics are just personal opinions on the topic. McWilliams does a great job talking about practical instances of suffering. His so called "womb to tomb" approach is pretty good. But some chapters are pretty high level and do not address the deep issues sufficiently. Especially when they are topics like racism. In his defense, at least he is willing to address the issue in principle. It is probably too great a task to discuss a topic like racism in a single chapter.

Part I is good reading and anyone dealing with the topic of "theodicy" should read it. If only to wrestle with the question of how much God permits and if his permission is part of his plan. In this area I have to disagree with the author as I see God behind everything, even the bad things, since His permissive will is still his will.

All in all i would recommend this book to those struggling with the issue of suffering or justice.
