Courtney Watson McCarthy is a paper engineer and graphic designer. With a degree in theatrical scenic design, she has worked as a model builder and designer in a variety of fields before discovering the magic of movable books. From the time she dissected her first pop-up book, determined to solve the riddle of how it worked, she was hooked. After experimenting with cards and other small projects, she went on to design and engineer Eye Magic (Tango Books, 2010), M.C. Escher Pop-Ups (Thames & Hudson, 2011), New York Times-acclaimed Gaudí Pop-Ups (Thames & Hudson, 2012), Pop-Up Numbers (Thames & Hudson, 2013) and Dalí Pop-Ups (Thames & Hudson). She lives in the Hudson Valley with her husband and two daughters.

Dali and pop-ups! On the one hand, Dali's art work seems to lend itself to the abstraction of pop-ups, on the other hand, the pop-ups sometimes add almost too much realism! Dali's artwork has fascinated me for years, at first I dismissed him as too bizarre, and just a showman, then years later I found much more to contemplate in his images. The pop-ups give me another look at his work and, I believe he would have loved the idea of playing with his images in 3 dimensions.
