I have always appreciated the artistry and skill that goes into making traditional quilts but have been hesitant to really get into piecing and quilting because I find most quilts made with traditional blocks to be too busy and hard on the eyes. So I very much appreciate what Maxwell has done with Fearless with Fabric. Most of her designs and suggestions focus on reducing the visual busyness of a quilt through the use of negative space and careful fabric selection. Maxwell obviously has a solid knowledge of traditional techniques that gives her the foundation to play with those techniques to create something new and modern. Her instructions are simple and easy to understand and her alternative suggestions are a great stepping stone for helping you create your own designs based on similar principles. I agree with the author that it can be hard to take traditional quilt patterns and make them look new and fresh. This author does a great job at giving the reader ideas on what can be done. Sure, instructions for each quilt they made are given, but it’s how they are talked about. Each pattern has info about how it would be traditionally done, then ideas on who to remix it, and then the authors pattern for the remix. This is very well done, and as a 30 year quilter there are still things i took away from this read.… (más)
