Esta obra contiene la edición fiel y completa de los textos hebreos y arameos no bíblicos encontrados en las distintas cuevas de Qumrán. Están incluidos no sólo todos los textos ya publicados previamente, sino también los más importantes de los manuscritos aún inéditos.
Se trata, además, de la primera traducción al español de esos textos, hecha directamente desde los originales. La obra ofrece los textos agrupados temáticamente, de acuerdo a los distintos géneros literarios a los que pertenecen: reglas, textos haláquicos, esca-tológicos, exegéticos, parabíblicos, poéticos, litúrgicos, astronómicos, calendarios y horóscopos y el Rollo de Cobre.
Una amplia introducción sitúa los textos en su contexto arqueológico y literario preciso y traza la historia de su descubrimiento y publicación. El capítulo final recoge una lista completa de todos los manuscritos encontrados en cada una de las Cuevas de Qumrán, acompañada de una breve descripción y de las referencias bibliográficas fundamentales.
Florentino García Martínez Trabaja directamente sobre los manuscritos de Qumrán desde hace más de quince años.
En la actualidad lo hace como director del Qumrán Institut, en la Universidad de Groningen (Holanda).
Es miembro del equipo internacional de editores de los Manuscritos del Mar Muerto y secretario de redacción de la Revue de Qumrán y del Journal for the Study of Judaism.
Autor de numerosos libros y artículos sobre Qumrán, su obra más reciente se titula Qumrán and Apocalyptic. Studies on the Aramaic Texts of Qum-rán (Leiden, 1992). Prepara el volumen correspondiente para la serie oficial «Discoveries in the Judaean Desert» de los textos hallados en la Cueva 11 encomendados a la Real Academia de Ciencias Holandesa, así como el libro que llevará por título Introducción a los textos de Qumrán, y que aparecerá simultáneamente en Italia, Holanda y España (en esta misma Editorial).
