I read the book “Penguins” A New Naturebook which is an informational book about different penguins. The book had a lot of information about the different penguins; the 17 species, where they live, how they move, what they eat and their predators. I liked this book because the illustrations and the language.
The illustrations in the book are just pictures of penguins but they have one picture on every page. Reading a non-fiction book can be boring but when you have pictures to look at it can help to make it easier to read. The pictures of the penguins really show what penguins do and what they look like. I like the picture of the King penguin jumping out of the water which corresponds with the information on the page about porpoising. The pictures all have captions and are clearly labeled.
The book has a glossary at the end and has vocabulary words in bold throughout the book. The book is an easy read but could also double as a science textbook. The vocabulary words are defined in an easy to understand manner. For example, the book defines species but it does it an easy way by saying different kinds. The words are appropriate for the age level and explained if they are too difficult to understand.
The main idea of this book is really easy to see since the title of the book is “Penguins”. Markert tried to make this an easy book for children to learn about penguins.
